For that person that went the extra mile and found a link to him shirtless. Kudos.

And another interesting tidbit for those who read Kat Richardson. I asked Chris who the model was for the vampire following Cal through the snow on the DEATHWISH cover, that she looked awfully familiar. Her name is Simone and he uses her for Kat Richardson's covers. What a small, small (model-wise anyway) world.

 | 09:47 am - DEATHWISH Cover and Tyler Young (New Cal) All right. Chris says although the DEATHWISH cover isn't quite finished (ie approved by the art department) you can have a look on his website: http://www.christianmcgrath.com/mainpages/pages/page2.html. It's the fourth one over on the top row. Lots of snow, can't miss it.
As for Tyler Young:

lj_releases [henrylyne]
 | 11:02 am - Release #34 Hello, here is the list of changes in release #34.
- The footer of all application pages was modified to make navigation easier. Additionally, it has a select box to "Change language".
- Also, minsecurity is respected in the UI of update.bml now, so that if you have a minsecurity set, that security level will be automatically selected in the drop-down, and options of "lesser" security will be disabled/grayed out. And for communities, the options are now public and members, instead of using the personal journal options in the list. No functional changes with all of this, just making the UI match what actually happens.
- The IE Thread Expander bug with deleted comments in comments tree was fixed.
- The look of "update journal" page (update.bml) was improved in "altlogin" mode, when you post entering login/password of other account.
- LJ documentation was updated and extended.

 | 01:41 pm - Re-examining 1600 I'm interested in seeing whatever you all have to say. :)
Taken from the current Midrealm A&S Newsletter 'Artes Draconis'. Re-examining 1600 By Warder Zygmunt Nadratowski
“Be it known to all who may be lovers of chivalry, that there will be held…[a] tournament - for that it is Spring.”
- Opening text of the flyer announcing the very first tournament, AS I.
With these elegant words, a Dream became a reality, and our Society was launched. Like many dreams, it did not spring from its creator’s mind fully formed. Since this was a Dream formed by an ensemble cast, it had many creators, and coalesced over time, rather than being born from one whole cloth. Even with all the new customs and traditions that have evolved over the past 40-odd years, some constants have remained. I like to think of them as our core values. They were also evident on that very first flyer:
“…to all who may be lovers of chivalry…all knights are summoned to defend in single combat the claims of their ladies to the title of ‘fairest’, signified by the crown which will be awarded to him who…fights most bravely. …All guests are encouraged to wear the dress of some age of Christendom…in which swords were used.i ”
Here, on the very first piece of SCA literature, neatly encapsulated, are our core beliefs – chivalry, nobility, honor and honorable combat - held dear to this day, which allow us all a common currency, wherever we may go throughout our world.
Because of the innocence of those times, things were done for fun, or out of innocent ignorance, that turned into tradition with the strength of law simply because everyone was making things up as they went along. Yet as time has gone on, some of our other traditions have become increasingly set in stone, when perhaps they should be re-examined and rationally discussed, so that our great Society can continue to flourish and its knowledge increase.
One of those items is our ending date. While our choice of 1600 is an excellent beginning, we really need to examine why 1600 was chosen in the first place, so that the Society might increase its authenticity among the wider world of Living History groups. There are other organizations, such as “Legio XX ii” and “Regia Anglorum iii” (one of the pre-eminent living history groups in existence), who have neatly defined both the when and why of their portrayals and time span. In addition, a slightly expanded area will also give us further subjects for research and persona portrayal.
The 1600 end date was recently brought back to the fore a few years ago when the Directors of the SCA began to develop a mission statement, which many other non-profit organizations also have.

 | 12:43 pm - Bad News and Good News First with the bad...Randall (aka the Cal cover model) moved from NYC and is no longer the cover model for our favorite Prozac poster child. I admit I was upset and, hell, *sad*. You get attached to the very first image you see of your characters and I'll miss seeing him on my covers terribly.
Now the good...Chris (All Hail, Articus), the most talented of artists, told me the new model, Tyler Young, was brilliant. Having seen one of the photo shoot shots, I must say he's not wrong. Tyler has an absolutely amazing face (a rather familiar looking one in fact, groan)--definitely born to brood, genetically predisposed to sulk. A Cal look through and through. His hair, however, is short (it keeps getting shorter in cover to cover. By book 7 Vin Diesel will be the model at this rate!)
So, be prepared for the change and when it happens welcome Tyler with open arms. He's even a Fantasy fan. Whew, and that face. I'll always miss Randall, but am grateful Chris did such an amazing job filling his damn sexy shoes.
Goodbye, Randall. We'll miss you Welcome, Tyler. Get a website and fangirls will bombard you with slobberingly lustful emails...you know, if that's your sort of thing.

 | 01:46 pm - Business Card Busy-ness It's all go at MOO Towers at the moment. We're bug squishing (virtual, not literal), printing, packing and party-planning.
The party's shaping up rather nicely, so we're hoping it should be lots of fun. If you're in London next Thursday, come along for a drink - and if you're quick, a wee bite to eat. If last years was anything to go by, it should be full of lovely people - and if you don't know anyone when you get there, you should definitely make a few friends before you head off home.( More )

Ж-Men...but not the ones you might expect! This week LJ Russia launched Ж-Men, a new comedy series about superheroes, inspired by the LJ communities dedicated to superheros, comics and cartoons. The title's "Ж" comes from ЖЖ, the nickname for LiveJournal in Russia.
Ж-Men's script is written by a group of LJ enthusiasts who also happen to be television professionals. Who knew? Following the premiere, five more episodes will be broadcast over the next two weeks. We hope you find the series fresh and enjoyable.
This is, of course, an experiment for LiveJournal. As always, we'd love to hear what you think! Current Mood: awake

 | 08:27 pm - HHS Moves to Define Contraception as Abortion
Huffington Post | July 15, 2008 | 02:24 PM (EST)
In a spectacular act of complicity with the religious right, the Department of Health and Human Services Monday released a proposal that allows any federal grant recipient to obstruct a woman's access to contraception. In order to do this, the Department is attempting to redefine many forms of contraception, the birth control 40% of Americans use, as abortion. ( Read more... )

 | 01:09 pm - OMG! Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog Neil Patrick Harris + Nathan Fillion + Joss Whedon = Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog.
Honestly. Do I really have to say anything more than that?
Go watch it here: http://www.whedon.info/If-DrHorrible-com-is-down-watch.html
ETA: Here's a bit more info on what this is from a review at Nymag.com:
The first installment of Joss Whedon’s low-budget online video Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog just went up, and it’s as thoroughly charming as we hoped! The musical series follows Dr. Horrible, a low-level costumed villain, as he attempts to win entry into the Evil League of Evil, defeat Captain Hammer, and win the love of that cute girl at the laundromat — video-blogging all the while....
The series freely borrows from any number of revisionist superhero comedies, from The Venture Bros. to Austin Grossman’s Soon I Will Be Invincible, but its winning performances and snappy dialogue mark it as a Whedon production through and through. Though it has better production values than your typical Web video, it still looks pleasantly cheesy. And the songs are just as cute — and as half-baked — as you’d expect from the guy who wrote the Buffy musical episode....
The series runs all week and disappears on Sunday night.
So, get it while it's hot, folks!

 | 03:30 pm - Thank you! First, thank you all very much for the kind words about the Constellation Award. If I replied to you all individually, I'd never get the next book finished and I'm sure you'd all rather I got down to that. (particularly those people who heard me read the first chapter at Polaris and now have to wait a year or so to find out how it ends)(how the book ends, not how the first chapter ends)(yeah, okay, you probably figured that out on your own but it doesn't hurt to be thorough)
Second, to answer the question that gets asked a lot these days, the wonderful people at Kalidescope certainly want to get the show out on DVD as soon as possible and are working very hard to see that it happens but I have no actual concrete news yet. As soon as I know, you'll know. If you can play region 2 and don't care that there's no extras, it is available from Amazon.uk.
Third, picture as promised. This was taken by the lovely _ocelott_ just after the awards ceremony and I actually rather like it. Given that I HATE having my picture taken that's saying something. Soft focus is a friend to the elderly...

 | 11:37 am - And in my abundant free-time... I am a girl who likes to keep busy. I do free-lance web programming along with my "day" job as a contract database designer. Obviously Donna and I keep busy with our writing. :D
And now I have a new hobby... designing covers for Cobblestone Press!

Those are my first two. I'm having a great time learning under the fabulously talented Sable Grey, and am really enjoying the chance to make use of a creativity that doesn't involve code. ;) Not that I don't love coding--I wouldn't have gotten a Computer Science degree if I didn't--but sometimes I want to do something else. And now I can!

If you have questions, go over and submit them. I'll be compiling them all in advance so she has time to come up with answers before she shows up to chat in the community. :)
Now's your chance! Go!

 | 01:15 am - Whee!
So, y'all remember that Constellation Award I was up for? Outstanding Canadian Contribution to Science Fiction Film or Television in 2007? I won. In the fine tradition of Canadian awards being shaped like maple leaves, this one has multiple points and I'm locking it in the trunk on the way home since it's the LAST thing you'd want bouncing around inside the car in case of an accident.
Pictures later but this was my thank you speech:
"I have to say that the fans I've acquired through Blood Ties are some of the most involved fans out there. When you guys love something, you really love it. And thank you for that. But, although I may have provided the source material and I'm honoured to have my name attached to Blood Ties, credit for the actual show has to go to a lot of other people -- first of all to Randy Zalken and Paul McConvey at Kalidescope who believed in the books and fought for years to bring them to the screen. There would have been no show without Randy and Paul's persistence in the face of nearly insurmountable odds. Of course we had a wonderful cast -- Christina Cox, Dylan Neal, and Kyle Schmid -- and an amazingly talented crew -- don't panic, I'm not naming each of them although I wish I could .
But, most of all, credit has to go to Peter Mohan, the best showrunner in the country -- and I'm not just saying that; he won the Writer's Guild of Canada Showrunner award this year. Peter not only translated the Vicki Nelson books to the screen but he put together a terrific group of writers and then saw to it that every single episode stayed true to the heart of the books while simultaneously sending the story off in exciting new directions.
So, although I'm going to hang on to it, this award is actually for Peter. Thank you, Peter.
And thank you all."
